The Khabarovsk Territory is one of the largest administrative-territorial areas of the Russian Federation, located in the central part of the Russian Far East. It borders with all regions of the Far Eastern Federal District, as well as with the PRC.

Administratively the region is divided into 17 districts, the capital of the region is the city of Khabarovsk, and is also the capital of the Far Eastern Federal District. In the province there are seven cities, 24 urban-type settlements, 186 rural administrations and 431 rural settlements.

In the province there are 1,427,000 people (as of January 1, 2004), including small-numbered peoples of the North. Eighty-five percent of the population lives in the cities of the region. On average, 1.8 people live on one square kilometer. The average age of the inhabitants of the region is 36.08 years.

The region is rich in forest, mineral, fish and other natural resources. 167 species of plants and fungi and 127 species of animals have been included in the Red Book of the Khabarovsk Territory. Among them there are rare species included in the International Red Book.

The Khabarovsk Territory is also an industrial region. Oil refining, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, military industry, production of medical products, household appliances, timber processing - this is far from a complete list of areas in which residents of the region are engaged.
